Luke 20
“Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
What is Caesar’s? If Caesar means the government, there are a few things that I need to give. Tax money, obedience to the laws, respect for leaders and their office, even my son as a soldier are all ways I can give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But that’s all. Caesar doesn’t need anything else. My sense of security should not depend on how many government forces are deployed for my defense. My sense of peace should come from God. A sense of entitlement, thinking that the government owes me something, other than freedom from tyranny, is not what I should look to Caesar for. God has given me everything I truly need. So what am I giving to Caesar that really belongs to God? Do my children belong to God? Should I send them to Caesar for 7 hours every day? Does my health belong to Caesar? Should I fill out endless forms to get free medicine? Does my future belong to Caesar? Should I then worry that Social Security might go bankrupt? And if I belong to God, then why don’t I act like it? Am I letting Caesar do what I should be doing? Am I giving to Caesar opportunities to show the love of God? Broken families, people in need, outcasts. Is it easier for them to turn to the government for help rather than to the body of Christ? Jesus was very clear and concise. He gave me a mandate. Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.
