Luke 4
“I must preach the kingdom of God… because for this purpose I have been sent.” – Jesus (Luke 4:43)
Chapter 4 begins with Jesus battling with the devil and closes with Jesus casting out demons. Satan’s attempt to cause Jesus to fall, confirmed His perfection as Christ “who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) The words of a worried demon also confirmed His deity, “…did you come to destroy us? I know who You are- the Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34)
This passage not only identifies the Son of God (4:3), but also exalts the Word of God. Jesus used the Word to answer Satan, “it is written” (v. 4,8,12). He also used it to point out prophesy that was being fulfilled by His activities (v. 18-21).
